Excerpt:
In Hiking Las Vegas, I covered some of the best bouldering, rock scrambling, and hiking trails for Red Rock Canyon and Mt. Charleston. Hiking Southern Nevada includes all new hikes in both of these areas and introduces hikers to the many routes and trails in the Lake Mead Area.
Red Rock Canyon, 20 miles west of Las Vegas, is the recreational showcase of Southern Nevada. Comprising nearly 200,000 acres of multicolored sandstone, ancient limestone, canyons, mountains, washes, and waterfalls, Red Rock is an outdoor playground waiting to be explored.
Mt. Charleston (elevation 11,918) is less than a one-hour drive from the Strip. Hikes in this area range from 30-minute jaunts to all-day excursions and await anyone who enjoys clean air, spectacular views, and the serenity of the mountains.
In the winter, Lake Mead National Recreation Area boats average temperatures in the 60s. From hot springs to mountain peaks, the Lake Mead Area is the perfect hiking destination during the winter.
Hiking Southern Nevada covers 50 hikes—23 in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, 11 at Red Rock Canyon, 12 in the Mt. Charleston Area, and four additional hikes to nearby peaks. None of these hikes requires technical climbing abilities; however, some include class II and III climbing. If you've never hiked before or you're not in fit physical condition, don't attempt the tougher hikes. Start with the easy hikes and progress to the more difficult ones.
Hiking improves cardiovascular fitness and is an inexpensive way to enjoy the outdoors. Using Hiking Southern Nevada as your guide, you'll go beyond the lights, congestion, and confusion of Las Vegas to places where clean air, open spaces, and magnificent sights awaits you.
