     Las Vegas has always been a good place for murder. The intoxicating mixture of gambling, sex, and booze can make for a lethal cocktail for anyone who overindulges in the city's celebrated traditions. Add drugs to the potion, and the outcome is all but assured. Around these parts, often all that separates high society and the lowlife subculture is the size of one's bankroll. And there's always someone willing to try to separate a man from his money.
     The September 17, 1998, death of high-living casino man Ted Binion swept across the Las Vegas valley like a late-summer thunderstorm delivering a 100-year flood. The facts of the case were played out like so much sensational thunder and lightning in the media. From the first suspicion that Binion's drug overdose might not have been accidental to the sentencing of his live-in lover, Sandra Renee Murphy, and his one-time friend, Montana contractor Richard Bennett Tabish, the case cast a spell over followers of true-crime courtroom drama across the country.
     What made the Binion murder special?
     Several things. First, the facts surrounding the death itself were in such dispute that for months expert investigators and medical examiners differed on whether he had died of an accidental drug overdose or something more sinister. And there was the specter of the Binion family, a legendary Las Vegas casino clan known as much for its tumultuous private life as its downtown Binion's Horseshoe gambling hall was known for high-stakes poker games.
     Beyond the facts of the case and the timeliness of the death so close to the turn of the century, the Ted Binion story marked the first time in Las Vegas history that a local homicide sustained the interest of the nation. It was the city's first made-for-TV murder.
